Adopted in 1993 by the IMO Assembly, the International Safety Management (ISM) Code provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention. It requires shipping companies to carefully consider their management structure and the responsibilities and authorities of those involved in the operation of their ships from a safety and environmental protection point of view. The ISM Code is mandatory since 1998. You can find more info about the ISM Code here.
About 30 years since its adoption, the IMO Secretariat has commissioned a comprehensive study to assess the effectiveness and implementation of the ISM Code, along with its related instruments.
The Study is intended to yield objective evidence, conclusions and proposed measures with a view to modernizing, streamlining and improving the effectiveness of the provisions in the relevant instruments and their implementation through safety management systems (SMS).
Seafarers have a key role in implementing the safety and environmental protection policy, in particular the SMS on board ships at sea. In this context, this questionnaire intends to collect seafarers’ views on the application of the ISM Code on board ships. Seafarers’ feedback will be instrumental for the understanding of the effectiveness and the level of implementation of the ISM Code. The feedback you give will inform future work on relevant instruments.
